When it comes to kitchen design, the range hood is often overlooked—but it can actually be one of the most striking focal points in the entire room. Beyond its practical purpose of ventilation, a hood has the power to influence the overall style of your kitchen, whether you’re aiming for timeless elegance, modern minimalism, or a rustic handcrafted look.
With so many options available, it’s worth exploring which type best fits your aesthetic and budget. Below are some of my favorite range hood styles that I’ve incorporated into client projects, each offering its own unique blend of function and beauty.
One of the most budget-friendly options, the metal chimney hood leans modern in style. These hoods are commonly available in stainless steel, but you can also find them in finishes that coordinate with appliances—black stainless, matte black, or white, for example. For something a little unexpected, a copper chimney hood adds warmth and personality, though copper does come at a higher price point.
If you’re looking for a true statement piece, a custom metal hood is a bold choice. While more of an investment than a standard chimney hood, this option allows for nearly endless creativity.
From copper and oil-rubbed bronze to gunmetal and more, custom metal hoods can be designed in unique shapes and often feature accents like decorative metal straps and rivets for added character. These hoods often feel like they’ve been hand-forged, instantly elevating the kitchen.
A personal favorite of mine, the Venetian plaster hood offers a completely customizable look at a relatively affordable price. This option is versatile—you can add niches for spices, extend pedestals to the countertop for a hearth-inspired design, or keep it clean and simple for a more modern aesthetic.
Typically built with lumber and sheetrock, these hoods are finished with joint compound or tinted Venetian plaster for texture and dimension. A matte varnish seals the surface while maintaining its natural, handcrafted appeal.
For those who want the range hood to serve as a true focal point, a wood hood is an elegant option. These are often painted or stained to match the cabinetry, or finished to contrast with the island for added visual interest.
Wood hoods can be designed with curves, tapers, mantles, or pedestals, making them versatile in style. Because of the craftsmanship involved, wood hoods usually fall on the higher end of the pricing scale.
Not every kitchen layout has a range against a wall. For islands, you can either opt for a statement-making island-style hood, finished on all sides and suspended from the ceiling, or a downdraft ventilation system built directly into the cooktop. A downdraft pulls air downward and outside, leaving your island open and unobstructed.
The right range hood has the power to completely transform your kitchen—blending function, craftsmanship, and beauty in one design element. Whether you’re drawn to the clean lines of a metal chimney hood, the artisan feel of Venetian plaster, or the bold presence of a custom wood or metal design, there’s a style to complement every kitchen.
